Working with FM Conway for 4 months in London
As part of the first phase of the Illuminated River Project, CAN provided specialist access solutions to support the replacement of lighting systems across four iconic Thames bridges. The work called for careful planning, close coordination and safe delivery in a challenging city-centre environment.

In 2019, as part of Phase 1 of the Illuminated River Project, CAN was asked to assist with the removal of the existing lighting systems and installation of a new integrated architectural lighting system to 4 iconic Thames bridges; Millennium, London, Southwark and Cannon Street.
Site constraints included but were not limited to:
Working on 4 Thames bridges simultaneously, each with their own unique designs and features.
- Organising works around and under the operational railway.
- Working over a tidal river, on navigable and non-navigable bridge spans.
- Working in and around confined spaces.
- Working in and around pedestrians, cyclists, vehicle traffic and river traffic
CAN created bespoke access solutions for each of the 4 bridges to allow CAN technicians, as well as third-party personnel, to access all required locations in a safe and efficient manner.
The project required the removal of 1,100m of cable tray, 2,300m of cable and 140 lighting units and the subsequent installation of 3,300m of cable tray, 8,200m of cable and 1,470 lighting units.
All works completed to London Bridge were undertaken without disruption to the pedestrian footpaths and carriageway to deck level or to river traffic using the navigable and non-navigable bridge spans.
The project was completed on time and ready for the acclaimed ‘launch’ on 17th July.
