CAN was requested to undertake the replacement of the lighting system to Centre Court, Wimbledon.

As with all stadia projects, it was imperative all works were completed without encroaching on the court.  This limited the available ‘lay down’ area to a small zone at each end of the court.  It also meant that traditional forms of access such as mobile elevated work platforms could not be used, as these would have to be sited on the grass court!

To gain access to and install the lights, each roof truss of the retractable roof was in turn located over the small ‘lay down’ area and ‘locked down’ in position.  Using rope access, CAN technicians employed aid climbing techniques to ‘climb’ on the steel work and thus access the lighting unit locations.  The redundant lighting was then removed from the truss, lowered off into the lay down area, from which the new LED lighting system was then lifted into place and secured in place.

In total 140 old lighting units were removed and replaced with 190 new lighting units and associated cabling over the planned 4 week project duration.
