CAN pulls out all the stops to get the road open and safe again
Recent rockfall on the busy Via Gellia Road had led to a road closure, raising concerns over potential future rockfalls. Mobilising to site quickly, CAN assisted the client’s engineer to develop a stabilisation measure that could be installed straight away.
Whilst clearing the faces of vegetation further areas of loose rocks were found and removed. A combination of 946m2 of passive rockfall netting and 235m2 of active restraint netting were installed across the site. The active restraint netting was installed over a large buttress of rock adjacent to the road, with the passive rockfall netting installed across the rest of the majority of the face to capture any loose spalling rock.
Due to the restricted access to the top of the 25m high rock face, a combination of a 17m telehandler and a hauling systems were used to manoeuvre the netting into position, with the CAN team using industrial rope access techniques to move around the face. CAN completed the works ahead of schedule to allow a timely reopening of the road.
