Northumberland County Council wished to support a funding request, to the National Lottery, for the refurbishment of the Grade 1 listed Union Chain Bridge, with a detailed inspection.
Bridge loading restrictions on this single span structure, high above the River Tweed on the border of England and Scotland, precluded the use of conventional means of access.
CAN was requested to undertake a full inspection to determine the extent of the works necessary.
CAN technicians using industrial rope access techniques where able to access the full envelope of the structure. Defects were described, measured and recorded on annotated drawings for the client to interpret in a final report. From this report a detailed schedule of repairs was generated enabling refurbishment costs to be established.
