Northumberland County Council approached CAN to tender for the inspection of the Grade I Listed Union Chain Bridge that spans the River Tweed on the border of England and Scotland.
With a current request for funding to refurbish the structure being put through to the National Lottery, a full inspection was required. This would determine the extent of the works necessary to return this bridge to its former glory and ensure its continued longevity.
Access was always going to be a problem, with it being single span and high above the river. This, coupled with loading restrictions, prohibited the use of MEWP’s or scaffold systems. CAN employed rope access techniques in order to access all elements of the bridge.
CAN spent several weeks carrying out the survey, picking up hundreds of defects. From this, a detailed report was created from which a schedule of repairs will be created, hopefully leading to funds being granted.
