CAN was requested to undertake brickwork repairs and de-vegetation works to the Richmond Rail Bridge. The vegetation was to be removed using hand tools and then subsequently treated with a proprietary weed killer. Having removed the vegetation the extent of the brickwork repairs could be ascertained: 4m2 of brickwork required replacement with a further 28m2 of repointing was identified.

Site constraints included working over water and working adjacent to the operational railway.
PTS qualified CAN technicians employed industrial rope access techniques to access the facades to the pier heads and cutwaters with a safety boat in attendance to provide rescue cover.

A flexible working pattern, requiring a combination of standard and out of hours shifts, enabled the brickwork refurbishment to be completed with minimal impact on the operational railway and river traffic.
