Corrosion had led to concerns about the integrity of the brackets that secure the canopy cladding panels to the South Stand at Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United Football Club.
As part of an ongoing maintenance plan repairs were required to the roof cladding panels and the supporting steelwork.
CAN was requested to design an access system and repair strategy that would create the least possible disruption to the daily activities of the club.
An adaptation of the lightweight CAN-Span access platform, with side mounted catch nets supported on extended outriggers, provided a safe and stable work platform for undertaking the repair works. The modular CAN-Span system was assembled into 6m lengths, provided excellent lateral access and was easily relocated around the stand.
The modular nature of CAN-Span ensured the mobilisation, assembly, installation, strip out and demobilisation of the system could be achieved without impact on the daily club activities and without encroaching on the field of play.
