The iconic Central London Millennium Bridge footbridge over the River Thames, was in need of its paint system renewing. The major problem presenting itself was keeping the bridge open to both the public and to the river traffic below. Let alone the inherent problems of working at height and over water.
Utilising CAN’s 30 year expertise in working on such structures two bespoke systems were designed. These served to both assist in access and to encapsulate the work areas, eliminating the possibility of paint or materials entering the river. Firstly, for works to the hangers/outriggers, pier tops and cables, an underslung containment system was developed. This was to be used in conjunction with the CAN’s own CAN-Span access platforms, whilst the second solution for works to the cable was to create a bespoke buggy.
Throughout the works the bridge remained open to the general public and navigable for the shipping below. Legislation relating to all aspects of the project was complied with throughout. Be that through the provision of ICATS qualified painters, detailed QA documentation and adhering to Highways and Environment Agency requirements.
