CAN was appointed to undertake the inspection of 32 motorway drainage soakaways, averaging a depth of 10m and running under the hard shoulder of the motorway.
The works were carried out as part of a feasibility study for a major motorway improvement scheme.
No previous records, drawings or surveys were available and some soakaways were in unknown locations.
Two teams of inspectors trained in confined space work and abseil access techniques were deployed using force fed breathing apparatus due to the potential for noxious gas release from the slit as the inspectors transited through the soakaway.
Detailed reports were issued to the client to facilitate the evaluation of the loading capabilities of the soakaways.
