As part of a facility expansion scheme, rock face stabilisation work was required at Langsett Water Treatments Works, situated beside Langsett Reservoir in the Peak District.
The rock face was situated adjacent to the area where the foundations to the new building were to be constructed. CAN was appointed to create a design and build solution to control the rock fall risk to the new building.
The design solution adopted was to install a passive rock fall netting drapery across the exposed face, with rock bolts installed to secure the netting. Site preparation works including clearance of vegetation, stump treatment and scaling were carried out initially.
In an area of the rock face where a recent rock fall had taken place, a significant void had been created and dry sprayed concrete was used as dentition to fill the void and provide support to the rock mass above. Rock bolts were then installed at the crest and toe, and 250m² of Maccaferri PVC double twist rock netting was installed over the face to contain future rock fall.
The works were completed on time, safely and within budget. CAN was further called upon during the construction phase. This time to bolt and strap a potentially loose block in the side of the foundation excavation to make it safe for works to continue.
