Supporting Deutsche Windtechnik over 2 weeks in Halkirk, Scotland
CAN was appointed to clean three wind turbines following gearbox oil leaks, restoring the assets while carefully managing environmental considerations and the challenges of working at height in a remote location.
Causeymire Wind Farm, a remote site in the North of Scotland, faced a maintenance challenge. Three turbines had suffered gearbox leaks, leaving oil stains on the nacelle, blades, and tower. The visible contamination raised environmental concerns and concerns from local residents, resulting in a need for immediate action. The turbines’ height and location made conventional cleaning methods unsuitable and CAN’s unique access methods essential.
CAN proposed a hands-on cleaning solution using industrial-grade agents, carefully containing both oil and cleaning liquids to protect the environment. Drawing on decades of experience accessing challenging structures, our team safely reached difficult areas around the nacelle, blades, and tower. Every stage balanced operational safety, environmental responsibility, and effective stain removal, ensuring the turbines were fully restored without disruption.
Over 14 days, a four-person team cleaned all three turbines, restoring them to a professional and visually improved state. The work was praised by both the client and the local community, demonstrating CAN’s expertise in solving complex, high-access challenges. This project reinforced our reputation for combining innovative techniques, specialist skills, and environmental care to deliver practical, high-quality solutions in demanding locations.
