The project required the undertaking of a principal inspection of Flintshire Bridge, a 1km long 20-span cable-stayed road bridge, including a 130m high tower and 76 cables supporting the main span.
The 30m wide concrete soffit of the deck required a tactile survey, the question being how to access this in a cost effective and time efficient manner. To overcome this, CAN designed the CAN-Beam system. Its low profile allowed the inspection of the river span without disruption to the navigation channel.
Cherry pickers were used to inspect the voided approach viaduct requiring confined space operatives, whilst the cable stays were inspected by rope access methods.
A comprehensive report was issued to the client detailing the inspection’s findings, recommendations, defect location drawings and photographs.
